Geothermal activities and northern lights |
Known for its diverse fauna and flora, hot springs, lakes and rivers, Nesjavellir and Mt. Hengill is one of Iceland’s main scenic nature sites, located only 25 km away from Reykjavík. Hot steam from open craters, bubbling hot springs and dramatic landscape make this area unique. There are over 160 km of marked walking trails, ideal for light trekking and mountain biking. Other activities are fishing on Lake Þingvallavatn, horseback riding, and snowmobiling and northern light watching in the winter. Þingvellir National Park, Gullfoss and Geysir as well as the fjordlandscapes of Hvalfjörður are ideal for day excursions. Guided tours are available through the geothermal powerstation near the hotel. Detailed information is to be found in the Reykjavík Energy companies document on the geothermal power plant and geothermal energy in the Nesjavellir area.
