With its smooth green valleys, powerful glacial rivers flowing down from the highlands and bleak mountains, Skagafjörður district is both the traditional center for horsemanship and horse riding in Iceland and the heart of river rafting. Skagafjörður is a historically significant area, as important parts of the Sturlungasaga took place there, including events that ultimately led to the termination of the Commonwealth in 1264. At the numerous historical sites there are many beautiful old buildings. Among the main attractions are Glaumbær Folk Museum in an old turf farmhouse, the Western Emigration Centre in Hofsós village which is dedicated to the 19th century emigrations from Iceland to North America and Hólar, the old episcopal seat.
