West Iceland

The area between Reykjavik, Borgarfjordur, Akranes, Borgarnes and the Snæfellsnes peninsula is generally referred to as West Central Iceland. This may be the historically richest area of the country, with many sites of interest related to the sagas, Laxdæla and Egils saga in particular.

Among its most frequented natural attractions are Hvalfjörður fjord with Iceland’s highest waterfall Glymur, the Snæfell peninsula, the Snæfellsjokull and Langjokull glaciers and Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls. The main settlements are Akranes, Stykkishólmur and Borgarnes.
